This will be the last post here, I'll leave dacus.blogspot.com up for a month or so longer then it'll go away (I guess it'll live on in Google's cache).
I'll see what I can do about moving the links on the side over as well.
this blog will be transitioning to ericdacus.com and blog.ericdacus.com soon. when the move is done there will be a redirect. after that, no more blogger.
Really cool article and slideshow from the New York Times about the discovery of a suitcase of old negatives.

The creative life is about risks, not caution. About now, not later. And it’s about trusting that the creativity will be there when we need it. Don’t hold back. From the PxelatedImage blog.
Also, a really cool TED talk about the burden of always being creative and is in line with the above quote (and corresponding article).
All this to say that how engineering, design, photography all have an effect on me and the way I perceive work and play and I've been trying to think through it lately. Also, production drawings (look like blueprints), are not creatively inspiring to me, no matter how good the design is that will be made from them...
Its been just over one calendar year since I was able to get an SLR and I've shot a total of 5513 frames since April 19, 2008. Digital really helps overcome the technical hurdles of photography by sheer numbers: the technical aspects of how to use a camera (ISO settings, aperture, focal length, depth of focus, etc) have gotten easier, however, I feel like the next years challenge is going to be how to develop composition and how to create images that have a feel. I like telling stories and I would like my images to tell the stories visually. Photography has been a great outlet for me and I'm excited to head into year two.
The entire creative process requires you to be unsuccessful: failed concepts, long hours, repeated attempts, constant revisions, massaging the details, and patience carving your career.
Its sad that the Speak Up blog is closing down, it had a lot of good thoughts and posts and the above quote has helped me keep things in perspective when I have to start another File->New for the nth design iteration in SolidWorks.
I had a good conversation with a friend regarding my recent photos of flowers and Red Rocks and the critique of the compositions was really helpful! I hope I can remember his ideas and thoughts for next time.
